On October 8, 2026, the federal government announced a new National Heat Pump Rebate as part of a $2 billion plan to retrofit one million Canadian homes. Here is what Cobourg and Northumberland County homeowners need to know, and how it fits with the rebates already available in Ontario.
What the National Heat Pump Rebate Offers
- Up to $10,000 for eligible households with income below the median
- $2,000 for other eligible households
- For electric heat pumps, with no home energy audit required
- Applications through an online portal, with approval promised within 24 hours
- Can be combined with provincial programs such as Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program
When Does It Start?
The program is expected to open in early 2027. News reports say it will apply to heat pumps bought this fall, but the final rules have not been published yet. We will update this post as details are confirmed.
How It Stacks With Ontario Rebates
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program already offers up to $7,500 on a qualifying cold climate air source heat pump, or up to $12,000 on a ground source system, for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood. Enbridge natural gas customers can get up to $2,000 on an air source heat pump. Pre-approval is required before installation. See our rebates page for the full breakdown.
Should You Wait Until 2027?
Usually not. If your furnace or air conditioner is near the end of its life, or you heat with oil, propane or baseboards, waiting through a full winter can cost more than you save. You can lock in the Ontario rebate now, and if the federal rebate applies to fall 2026 purchases as reported, you may be able to claim it too. Keep your invoice, model numbers and installation date.
